Our guest favorite. A soak among the trees like never seen before.

A guest favorite that sold out last summer, Hideaway South is known for its wood fired outdoor soak tub, a design never seen in Finland before. Heating the tub in the evening becomes a quiet ritual in itself, an unhurried and meditative way to ease into a summer night. Hidden in the forest and made for lingering moments, the soak is the heart of the stay. This is a place for slow time together, where evenings stretch gently and the forest sets the pace.

The bikes can be picked up from the bike shed, located a little further along the road from Hideaway South, just before Hilltop House. To maintain privacy for Hilltop House guests, we ask that you do not continue past the bike shed. The lock code for the bicycles can be found in the cabin guidebook.

There is no traditional shower here. Bathing happens slowly with a handheld ladle, letting warm water fall gently over your skin.

Preparing your Forest soak

Arrive to an unhurried evening. Preparing the soak tub is part of the Hilltop experience, a slow and almost meditative ritual best enjoyed without rushing. We recommend starting well in advance, as filling and heating the tub takes around three hours. Below you will find everything you need to know for preparing your soak. Instructions are also provided in the cabin.

  • Extra care is needed when using fire in a forest environment. Never leave the fire unattended. You are fully responsible for safe use during both the heating and cooling phases.

Always check official forest fire warnings before lighting a fire, for example via Ilmatieteenlaitos. The soak tub stove is fully enclosed, which means it still may be used during forest fire warning periods. However, if the wind is strong or a warning is in effect, we still recommend using hot tap water instead.

As Hilltop landowners, for safety reasons, we have decided that during orange and red level forest fire warnings, lighting a fire is strictly prohibited. In these cases, the soak tub may be used by filling it with hot tap water.

A fire extinguisher is located next to the outdoor toilet. In case of emergency, the garden hose can also be used.

  • Firewood, kindling, and matches or a lighter are provided and ready to go by the soak tub, so there is no need to bring your own.

  • Before you start filling the tub, make sure the plug is in place. Only light the fire once the tub is full.

The soak tub can be filled either with hot water from the brass tap or with cold water using the garden hose.

    Important filling instructions:

    • Fill the tub in four stages. When the tub is about one quarter full, close the tap and wait around 2-5 minutes before continuing. Repeat this short pause after each quarter.

    • Use only one water source at a time. Either the hot water tap or the garden hose, but not both at the same time.

Using both water sources at the same time or filling the tub without pauses may cause the water supply to temporarily shut off for all guests at Hilltop. If that happens, our hosting team will need to guide you through getting the water back up and running.

It is not a disaster, but for the most relaxed and unhurried evening, we recommend following the steps above.

Thank you for helping us take care of Hilltop Forest 🤎

  • Always check official forest fire warnings before lighting a fire, for example via Ilmatieteenlaitos.

The soak tub stove is fully enclosed, which means it may officially be used during forest fire warning periods. However, certain conditions may still restrict its use. If the wind is strong or the forest ground is very dry, you are required to use your own judgement and consider using hot tap water instead.

During yellow level warnings, you may use your own judgement, but please proceed with extra care.

As landowners, we have decided that during orange or red level warnings, using fire is not allowed. The soak tub can still be used by filling it with hot tap water.

  • You can fill the tub directly with hot tap water.

Please note that the tap water is hotter than bathing temperature and the tap itself may also become hot. Be careful with your hands.

There is enough hot water to fill about half of the tub at one time. When the water starts to cool, close the tap and allow the water heater to recover for around 60 to 90 minutes before continuing.

For the final stage, we recommend topping up with cold water to bring the tub to a comfortable bathing temperature.

Keep the lid on while the water is running and while waiting, as this helps retain heat and prevents unnecessary heat loss.

    1. Only light the fire once the tub is full.

    2. When filling the tub, remember to pause the water for a few minutes after each quarter and use only one water source at a time, either hot or cold. Leave about 15 cm of space at the top.

    3. Remove the stove lid and light a small fire at the bottom using kindling.

    4. Gradually add larger logs as the fire strengthens.

    5. Keep the stove lid partially open to allow airflow.

    6. Stir the water regularly using the wooden paddle.

    7. The water will usually reach bathing temperature in about two hours.

    8. Stop adding wood when the water reaches around 32°C. The temperature will continue rising on its own to around 40°C.

    • Make sure the fire is completely out before going to sleep or leaving the area.

    • It is a good idea to use the garden hose around the tub and stove area to ensure there are no embers on the forest bottom.

    • If you heat the tub on departure day, make sure you allow enough time for the fire to be fully out before leaving.

    • Please empty the tub before check out.

    • One of the benefits of the aluminium tub is that the water stays clean for several days.

    • For one to two night stays, one tub fill is included with your stay. To help save water, energy, and the surrounding forest environment, the tub should only be filled once during your stay.

    • If you choose to reheat the tub, do not empty it between uses. Simply reheat the same water.

    • Cover the tub with the lid when not in use and overnight to help retain heat and keep the water clean.

3. guest with friends or kids

  • Yes! Three guests are welcome to stay at Hideaway Cabins, whether you are a group of friends or travelling with a child, at no extra cost if you bring your own travel cot or mattress and bedding. We have hosted many groups of three and families this way, and they have had a wonderful experience.

Unfortunately, we are not able to arrange an extra bed, and good to keep in mind that the cabins are small and designed primarily for two guests. Adding an extra bed will limit the space to move around, and amenities such as dishware and towels are planned for two.

If this setup feels right for you, simply make the booking for two guests and let us know in the Additional Information field that you will be bringing a third guest.

family moments in the forest

  • Children are very welcome at Hilltop Forest, and over the years many families have shared truly meaningful stays with us. Even a short visit can make a big difference. Days here are slow and simple, with no schedules or organised activities, just time together. Exploring the forest, hiding inside the cabin, soaking in the outdoor tub, playing board games, reading stories, and grilling something easy are often what guests value most.

It is important to note that Hilltop Forest is not a hotel or an activity resort. Stays are self guided, services are limited, and what we offer is a genuine and peaceful forest experience. Our spaces are not specifically designed as child focused properties, so families should consider whether this style of stay feels right for them.

A few practical things to know when staying with children:

    • Hilltop Forest is a real forest environment. Paths vary and the terrain is often rocky, which means constant supervision is needed, especially with toddlers and energetic young children.

    • The Hideaway Cabins have limited washing facilities, so cleaning small hands and faces calls for a relaxed and flexible mindset.

    • The cabins are compact and best suited for short stays when travelling light.

    • If you prefer more space, proper bathroom facilities, and a larger kitchen, Hilltop House is usually a better fit for families.

    • The Hideaway Cabins do not have curtains, which means summer mornings can be bright and early for light sleepers.

Every family is different. For some, Hilltop Forest is a deeply calming escape from everyday life. For others, it can feel more rustic and intense. The spaces are not designed specifically for children, and as always, children are the responsibility of their parents.

What we offer is forest, thoughtfully designed cabins, and outdoor bathing, all centred around uninterrupted time together.

  • Hilltop Forest is designed for calm stays in nature. Each Hideaway Cabin and Hilltop House is set privately in its own space within the forest, allowing guests to enjoy a sense of seclusion and quiet. That said, the forest is open and natural, and at times sounds may carry.

For this reason, we kindly ask guests not to play music outdoors and to be mindful of noise in general. Hilltop Forest is chosen by guests who value discretion, stillness, and time to slow down, and we are committed to offering peace and quiet for our neighbours, other guests, and the forest animals.

If you experience any disturbance during your stay, please do not hesitate to reach out to our hosting team. We are always happy to help and aim to resolve things quickly and thoughtfully.

  • Please note that there is no Wi-Fi in the Hideaway Cabins. Mobile data works well in the area, and both 4G and 5G connections are typically strong and reliable.
